Your Moon Cycle & Your Business: Using Your Body’s Natural Rhythm to Your Advantage
As women, we’re conditioned to operate within a society that often goes against our natural biology.
Because men function solely on a 24 hour cycle, we’re taught to expect the same consistency on a day-to-day basis. When in reality, our bodies are wired differently. Menstruating women operate on both a Circadian rhythm (24 hour cycle) and an Infradian rhythm (28 day cycle).
We’re given little to no awareness about this secondary rhythm—our moon cycle—and how it affects us on an energetic level throughout the month. This can cause us to unknowingly fight against ourselves, generating resistance, frustration, and ultimately burnout.
Understanding and embracing the ebbs and flows of our unique system helps us to function in alignment with our biology, instead of against it.
Each phase of our moon cycle contains energy that supports us in certain functions of our lives and business. Where one phase is best for connecting with others, another is ideal for resting and tapping into your intuition.
I’ve found that the more I attune my business to my body, the more supported and balanced I feel overall. In return, this enables me to be more successful in my business.
I discovered the concept of aligning activities with phases of my moon cycle while on a weeklong solo retreat—recovering from burnout, no less. I had booked a tiny house in the country to practice yoga and seek ways to establish more balance in my daily life.
While on this retreat, I was guided to the TED Talk, Loving Your Lady Parts by Alisa Vitti. In it, she shares how a major hormonal breakdown led her to researching hormonal dysfunction and how to treat it holistically. The insights she’s uncovered in her 15+ years of research are truly profound. What I share here is a small piece of her findings from her book, In The FLO: Unlock Your Hormonal Advantage and Revolutionize Your Life.
Alisa discovered that “as hormones stimulate the brain in different ways throughout the month, (we) are more interested and more naturally at ease with certain tasks at different times of the month. So when we plan our schedules accordingly, we may find even more success and experience less overall stress on our bodies.” (Source)
We can use this to our advantage by aligning our business activities to the phase of our moon cycle. To know which phase you’re in, you can track your cycle with an app such as Natural Cycles, which is what I use. (Note: this is a referral link. Aligning Your Business with Your Moon Cycle
Follicular Phase: Initiate & Plan
The Follicular phase begins the day after your bleed ends, initiating a new monthly cycle that lasts about 7–10 days. This signals a fresh start and is the ideal time to begin a project. It’s also when we have the most access to our creativity, so it’s a great time to plan, strategize, and brainstorm.
How to use this time:
Envision, concept, brainstorm
Initiate, prepare, plan
Research, explore, gather resources, interview others
Take a class, attend a retreat
Set intentions and goals
Outline your strategy
Problem solve
Make decisions
Ovulatory Phase: Connect & Collaborate
During the 3–4 days near ovulation, we are our most magnetic. Our communication skills and energy is at a high. This is the perfect time for being in community and expressing ourselves.
How to use this time:
Socialize, network, be in community
Pitch projects and promote your ideas
Negotiate and collaborate
Show up on social media, record lives and other videos
Schedule meetings, coffee dates, speaking events, and important conversations
Write blog posts, website copy, or social posts
Luteal Phase: Focus & Finalize
In the Luteal phase when hormones reach their peak and begin to decline, our body is at a stage of completion. During these 10–14 days, we are our most detail-oriented and focused at this time. It’s the ideal time to finish projects and tie up loose ends.
How to use this time:
Get organized and work towards the goals you set at the beginning of your cycle
Tend to administrative tasks, finances, or any other detailed activities
Block time for deep, focused work
Edit and review documents, contracts, and budgets
Menstrual Cycle: Rest & Reflect
During the 3–7 days of your period, your yin (feminine) and yang (masculine) energies are in greatest alignment. It’s a good time to seek balance; evaluate the previous month and course correct, if needed. This is also when our bodies typically need the most rest, so be sure to allow yourself that—put it on your calendar if you need to!
How to use this time:
Review the past month with kindness and grace
Reassess your goals
Tap into your intuition; meditate, journal, take note of your dreams
Rest and allow yourself more space at this time
The main takeaway is this: there is great power in working with nature and honoring our body’s natural rhythms—it’s how we tap into flow instead of fighting against resistance.
However, every body is different; what matters is finding a method that feels supportive to you. ♡
